The Wu surname has a long and distant source and an ancient history; it is one of the oldest surnames of our country. Its first ancestor is the Yellow Emperor, common ancestor of the Chinese people. The brothers Taibo and Zhongyong were the Yellow Emperor's twenty-sixth-generation descendants. Later, Taibo and Zhongyong thrice yielded the throne to their youngest brother Jili, left Mount Qi in Shaanxi and, cutting through thorns and brambles, came to the then backward land of the Jing barbarians, today's Meicun town in Wuxi, Jiangsu. They adopted local custom, cut their hair and tattooed their bodies, went fishing with the local people, taught them to clear land and plant rice, mulberry and hemp, and passed on the advanced farming techniques and culture of the Central Plains. Winning the support of several thousand local households, they established the state of Gou Wu. In the fourth generation, King Wu of Zhou (Jili's grandson) overthrew the Shang and founded the Zhou dynasty; he sought out Zhou Zhang, great-grandson of Taibo and Zhongyong, and formally enfeoffed him with the state of Wu. From then on the descendants took the state as their surname, and Taibo became the founding ancestor of the Wu. Taibo's virtue was lofty; in the Spring and Autumn period Confucius praised him: 'Taibo may indeed be said to have been of supreme virtue!' Hence the Wu hall names 'Hall of Supreme Virtue' (Zhide tang), 'Bohai Hall' and 'Hall of the Three Yieldings' (Sanrang tang).
The state of Wu founded by Taibo passed to the eighteenth generation, Shoumeng, when it began to flourish and its ruler took the title of king. He gathered talent widely, exchanged envoys with the states of the Central Plains, and absorbed their advanced culture. Before long Wu became a great power, strong in arms and rich. At this time another yielding prince appeared in Wu: Jizha. Shoumeng had five sons, of whom Jizha was the most virtuous and accomplished, esteemed from childhood by his father and brothers. After Shoumeng's death his three elder brothers each wished to yield the throne to Jizha, and three times he declined. In the end he left the capital Wuxi and withdrew to the countryside at Yanling to farm. Confucius spoke highly of him: 'Jizi of Yanling is the one in Wu who knows the rites. Born among the barbarians, he knew ritual and righteousness, understood governance from hearing music, and grasped the nature of states by observing human feeling; this was not learned but innate.' When Jizha died he was buried at Yanling, and Confucius himself inscribed his stele: 'Tomb of Jizi of Yanling of Wu.' From then on Jizha's branch of the Wu also used Yanling as its hall name, and its door couplets favour 'the grace of Yanling through the generations, the family manner of Bohai'.
The Southern Song chancellor and national hero Wen Tianxiang composed a couplet in high praise of Taibo's and Jizha's noble integrity: Good fortune opened at Meili; supreme virtue left at Qi a family renown of friendship and yielding that never falls; Grace began at Yanling; a lofty spirit passed to the south a natural loyalty and filial piety that ever endure.
Xuan gong, styled Jicai, Taibo's seventy-first-generation descendant (AD 874-950), carried forward Taibo's pioneering spirit. Heedless that he was already an old man of 63, he abandoned the comfortable nest of an imperial son-in-law and resolutely led his whole family from Sichuan across a thousand miles of mountains and rivers to Nanfeng and Linchuan in Jiangxi, where he founded a new home. Later generations praised him in verse: He would not wear the royal title the Meng house conferred; he trekked through cloud and mountain, ten thousand folds deep; he came to Jiangnan and became our founding ancestor; for a thousand ages those after him look up to his lofty spirit. Today the line of Xuan gong is the largest branch of the Wu surname across Jiangxi, Sichuan, Fujian, Guangdong, Hunan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and south China.
Yinghui gong, Xuan gong's ninth-generation descendant, was born at the end of the Yuan. Chivalrous from youth, bold and resourceful, he resolved to save the people, answered the uprising of the Ming founder Zhu Yuanzhang, and through accumulated merit was made a general. In the seventh year of Hongwu he was ordered south, garrisoning Shunde County; the next year he was transferred to Changle County and settled at Xiatan village there. His grandson Ming gong moved again, in the Chenghua era, to Qingtang village in Huanglong township. Yinghui gong is thus the founding ancestor of the Wu in Wuhua, Guangdong.
Yinghui gong's great-grandson Hu gong, with his son Yuanguang gong and grandson Zongzhi gong, came to Chengtian village in Longchuan County to found a new home. Before long Hu gong grew old and was taken back to Qingtang in Wuhua by Yuanguang gong. From Zongzhi gong's arrival at Chengtian to the present is more than four hundred years, with over 300 households and more than a thousand people.
Rich in pioneering spirit, the descendants of the Wu have survived countless wars, natural disasters and harsh environments through thousands of years of historical change. Their footprints cover the whole country, and many have gone to neighbouring lands such as Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and to every part of the world. Their contributions to the economic and cultural progress of the countries and regions where they live are recognised worldwide, and Zhide tang clan associations exist in every major city. Wu is one of China's ten great surnames; according to 1984 statistics the Wu population of the whole country exceeds 25 million, and among overseas Chinese it is also one of the more numerous clans.
In a flourishing age histories are compiled; so it has always been. To keep pace with social development, to connect Chinese at home and abroad, and to strengthen national cohesion for the revival of China, it is essential to compile national histories, local gazetteers and the genealogies of every surname, and to use them as material for patriotic education. To this end, in 1984 the Ministry of Education, the Archives Bureau and the Ministry of Culture jointly issued the 'Notice on assisting the compilation of the Comprehensive Catalogue of Chinese Genealogies', a timely measure that won broad support and was acted upon throughout the country. The branch genealogy of the Wu of Chengtian village, Longchuan County, is a product of that call.
The purpose of compiling the Branch Genealogy of the Wu Surname of Chengtian Village is that the descendants of the Wu may know their roots and understand their origins, honour their ancestors and live in harmony as a clan, carry on the past and open the future, and continue to uphold the fine traditions of the Chinese people; otherwise they would forget their ancestry and become a tree without roots, a stream without a source. It is hoped that worthy sons and grandsons of the Wu in later generations will continue to compile this branch genealogy generation after generation, treasuring and preserving it.
The ancestral hall of Zongzhi gong, first ancestor of Wenjiao in Chengtian, and the hall of Yuluan gong, seventh ancestor at Xintangni, have in recent years both been restored anew; now the branch genealogy is again revised and respectfully offered, so that above it may comfort the ancestors and below be handed to posterity to educate later generations.
May the descendants of the Wu flourish for ten thousand generations! May the pioneering spirit of Taibo gong and Xuan gong endure forever!
